Machine Learning Zone Report

Read the report: Machine Learning Zone Report – November 2019 [PDF] The Machine Learning Zone was supported by the University of Oxford. In this activity, students connected with University of Oxford researchers working on things like how to make sure robots don’t crash into each other when they can’t talk to each other, why human brains are so good at learning, the ethical issues of robots working in hospitals and health care, and making computers that can learn to spot patterns in genetic data. This zone saw an increase in students logged in and questions asked than the previous I’m a Researcher activity, Curiosity Carnival, in 2017. Students had lots of questions about careers and education in particular, including questions about studying and working at the University of Oxford. Students from schools across England connected with nine researchers at the University of Oxford: Yee Whye Teh, who won this zone, … Continue reading

Student winner – Machine Learning Zone

During the activity in November we asked the researchers and moderators to select the students who stood out for them: the students they thought asked the best questions, or engaged most in the live chats. Well done to all of the students, and everyone who took part. There were so many interesting questions, and comments, but there could only be one winner. So, for fantastic engagement during the activity, for posting brilliant questions and comments, the student winner below will receive a certificate and a gift voucher. The student winner in Machine Learning Zone is… mjs11, Fitzharrys School, Abingdon

Thank you from your winner – Yee Whye!

Wow that was a very nice surprise! I had such a good time answering questions and chatting throughout the two weeks that it hadn’t occurred to me that there’s a prize to be won. I’m very glad that the students enjoyed interacting with me as much as I interacted with them.  I will use the prize money to encourage and enable the graduate students in my department to do outreach activities. Thank you for all the great questions, ranging from science – “Could it be possible to create a robot that learns?” to profound – “Do you think AI will eradicate us all?” to the everyday – “Do you like lasagna?”. The answer is yes for me for the last one btw! A big thank you also to the I’m a Researcher team who had everything running so smoothly and getting everybody together, as well as Mareli Grady, the outreach … Continue reading
